Process of selection in the Cup of Excellent Experiences

The top four of excellent experiences will be selected by an independent jury, following the procedure and using the criteria listed below.

The procedure

The procedure for selection is as follows:

  • All received experiences that meet the three basic criteria will be reviewed by the jury of experts. Evaluation will take place on the basis of a set of pre-defined questions that we developed for the criteria described below.
  • The four experiences with the best results will be nominated for the below mentioned awards. The experience evaluated as most outstanding will be the winner of the Cup of Excellent Experiences 2008.
  • The four winning experiences will be informed of their selection beginning of September and have to start preparations for a full systematization of their experience. In addition, preparations for filming will be made.

Awards

The four experiences selected will be rewarded with an elaborate systematisation of their experience by a contracted consultant, facilitated by the Progreso Network. Short videos about the experiences will complete the rewards. Both systematisations and videos of the winning experiences will be published and promoted on the website. And for the most innovative and relevant experience: $7500!

All received experiences that meet the basic requirements will be made available on our website, regardless their evaluation on the selection criteria. Although only available in summary, they can serve as promotion material and provide a basis for further learning and exchange.

The jury

The jury of experts consists of:

1.    Prof. dr. Ruerd Ruben is Director Centre for International Development Issues (CIDIN) at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He has broad expertise in issues of rural development and access of farmer organisations to the (global) markets. As researcher and advisor he has been involved in organisation development processes of producer organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

2.  Mrs. Tatiana Lara Pineda, freelance consultant, Honduras. Mrs. Lara has ample experience in organisation development processes through her involvement in management of cooperative La Central in Honduras. During her work for La Central she was responsible for marked development, marketing, (export) sales, setting up quality systems and certification.

3.   Mrs. Edith van Walsem, director of ILEIA, the Centre for Information on Low External Input and Sustainable Agriculture, Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Mrs. van Walsem is specialised in sustainable land use, the role of farmer organisations in a globalising world and empowerment of women. As director of ILEIA she is responsible for information provision to and between farmer organizations and fieldworkers.

The criteria

To be evaluated, the experiences need to meet the following basic requirements:

·  The application describes an experience of the development of a producer organisation

·  The application follows the format that was provided

·  The experience relates to an aspect of organisational development

Selection of the 4 winning experiences will be based on the following criteria

·         Level of relevance of the experience for other producer and supporting organizations worldwide

·         Level of innovative quality of the solutions that were developed in relation to the challenges

·         Level of impact of the experience on the overall performance of the organization

Relevance

An experience is relevant if it matches with other producers’ (or support organisations’) current search for information or tools in order to improve their organisation. The experience will demonstrate adaptable approaches that are applicable in different contexts, and offer knowledge, insights and lessons which are useful for other producer groups.

Innovation

An experience has innovative quality if something new has been applied - a new idea, method or approach - that has not been used so far by others in the same situation. This ‘something new’ will have solved a problem and, to some extent, have changed the organization or have added a new dimension to the way they operate.

Impact

An experience has impact if the innovation has a positive and lasting effect on the organization’s performance. Ideally, there are also signs of a (possible future) positive effect for individual producers.

If you have any questions on the criteria or the procedure please contact us on info@progresonetwork.org. The results cannot be negotiated.
